O'Connor to become the first woman justice in the 191 years of the Supreme Court. Mrs. O'Connor, 51, would fill the vacancy created by Justice Potter Stewart’s retirement. Youths looted shops and attacked police Tuesday in North London as street violence flared in England for the fifth straight night. John McEnroe, the new Wimbledon champion, Tuesday became the first tennis player ever to simultaneously hold the No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles by the Association of Tennis Professionals. This week's computer rankings reflects McEnroe’s victory over Sweden’s Bjorn Borg in the Wimbledon finals last Saturday. The 22-year-old New Yorker also teamed with fellow American Peter Fleming to capture the Wimbledon doubles championship. The N. C. Legislature passed a $11.7 billion state budget. C 28782 THURSDAY, JULY9, 1981 price 10c Per Copy Tryon Chamber Is Busy During the month of June the Tryon Chamber of Commerce had sixty-two inquiries from 21 different states. Inquiries were received from Missouri, Illinois, Arizona, Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, New Jersey, New York. Wisconsin, Maine, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maryland, California, Kansas, Mass., North Carolina, New- Mexico, Indiana. The inquiries were from people who were interested in coming to this area. They wanted to know about the climate, recreation, real estate, medical care, schools and cultural activities. Landrum Athletic Boosters Club will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday. July 13th at 8 p.m. at the High School Gym. Joe Humphries is the president. Region C Committee Meets The Region C Employment and Training Advisory Committee will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, in the conference room of the Isothermal Planning and Development Commission, Simpson Building, 101 West Court Street, Rutherfordton, North Carolina. The meeting is open to the public. Opportunities At Sheltered Workshop John Matthew is the new director of the Polk County Sheltered Workshop, a private non profit organization which provides training and employment opportunities for handicapped citizens. Some of the opportunities are as follow: •Employment opportunities in industrial assembly (for handicapped citizens only). •Complete woodworking shop with a wide range of equipment is available free of charge for use to community organizations for a specific project (some reorganization may be required). •A wide selection of prepared floral arrangements available at no cost for memorials, etc. •Volunteers wishing to donate one day per week or more are actively needed in: Food preparation and service, industrial production training, and a wide range of one-to-one services and instruction to the trainees •Ceramics program with paragon kiln, potters wheel, and other supplies available for those interested in forming a ceramics class. Earle School will be the guest storyteller The filmstrip, “Angus and the Ducks" is to be shown. Marijuana Plants Found Wednesday Ray Phillips and Dean Hamrick of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Dc P l - approximately 100 marijuana plants 5*4 ft. tall Wednesday in the Oak Grove Community of Greenville County. Deputy Dean Hamrick said that the plants were found in an isolated area about 1 mile from a paved road. Art On Display At Tryon Depot The new display of paintings in the foyer of the Tryon Depot are the works of Christine Fitch of Landrum. Well known as an actress and singer both here and abroad, Christine trained in art at Trent Park College in London, England and holds a London University teaching diploma in art. She taught art, art history and appreciation at Manorside Girls’ school in North London before branching into her theatrical career. Mrs. Fitch is presently an instructor for Tryon Painters & Sculptors and has been teaching sumi-e painting in Studio 1.
